A mailbox is a receptacle of all our important mail. It can hold letters, important documents, packages, and even money. How can one ensure that his or her mailbox is secure and free from vandalisms, theft, and wreckage? This article will give you pointers on how to choose the right mailbox for you.

The first thing that you must consider is the material the mailbox is made of. You must make sure that your mailbox is made of the best materials there is. It must be sturdy, strong and can stand extreme weather. Examples of strong materials that are ideal in mailboxes are copper, brass, and aluminum. Of course, the material is not the only thing that makes it strong. Your mailbox must also be coated with a special material like poly-urethane powder coat finish to make it stand against the forces of nature.

Next, make sure that your mailbox can hold mail securely. That is, it must be sealed and have a good strong door that will ensure the safety of your mail. Another plus would be special heavy duty locks and keys that will only open when with a special combination. There are also other mailboxes that automatically open when there is mail to be placed and closes tightly when the mail is successfully placed inside. It would be best to invest in high-tech mailboxes especially if you expect to receive highly important packages.

Another thing to consider is the size of your mailbox. Is it spacious enough to receive all the possible package and mail you will receive? A large receptacle is always great since you won’t have to worry about the safety of your package because it can fit nicely inside your mailbox.

The last thing you should consider is the design of your mailbox. Usually, mailboxes can be costum made, and so always make sure that your mailbox is made of good material, has secure locks, before you think of a good design for it. If you intend to use it as a reflection of your occupation, then you can use that to design your mailbox. For example, if you are a chiropractor, you can have the human vertebra as design for your mailbox. Also, your mailbox can be a symbol of your personality, likes, and dislikes. For example, if you like animals, you can have it shaped like a dog. Or if you like sci-fi, then you can have it shaped like a robot. There are various designs that you can incorporate into your mailbox. Just be creative about it. Choose something that you think will look good in your lawn and that will also reflect the owner of the mailbox.

Overall, these are the things that you must look out for in choosing a mailbox. By order of importance, the first is the material that it is made of, second, the security locks, third, the size, and lastly, the design.

When we say mailbox, the first image that comes to our mind is a typical shaped mailbox mounted on the front lawn just outside the fence by the side of the road. This common image is actually what we call a rural mailbox and it is one of the most unsafe mailboxes there is. This is because they are mounted on roadsides where cars and other vehicles can freely crash into them. Mailboxes of this type are located on a rural mail route and are stricly placed on the right side of the road through which the local postman can deliver or take mail with ease. Commonly, these mailboxes are piled or huddled together on the side of the road like gnomes on a lawn. It is usually made of non-corrosive aluminum or electro-galvanized steel. Mailboxes made of these strong materials will reduce the probability of breakage and damage.

The rural mailbox is grouped into three types. They are usually around 75 to 100 dollars. The first type is heavy duty rural mailbox. This mailbox is very durable, strong and sturdy, as the name implies. It is usually made of heavy duty steel or aluminum. It is hammered out to form a thick durable aluminum surface and is constructed with a strong aluminum front door and back coat. It is also polished with poly-urethane powder coat finish to prevent corrosion and wreckage. It also comes with sealed joints that prevent rain and snow from going into the mail.

The next type of mailbox is the deluxe rural mailbox. These mailboxes are usually those that have luxury painted all over it. Similar to heavy duty rural mailbox, it is made to be extremely sturdy and wreckage free. These mailboxes also ensure the complete safety of your mails and sometimes come with a newspaper holder.

The third type is the antique rural mailbox. Made with the same goal of a sturdy and secure mailbox, the antique rural mailbox is sometimes made of brass or copper that is especially coated with special chemicals that will protect it from being tarnished or from damage caused by strong weather conditions. Because it is antique, it usually looks like the typical old mailbox that is a great reminder of the olden times.

Since rural mailboxes are prone to getting vandalized or robbed, nowadays, they come with heavy duty locks that only open with a specific combination of three keys. They are also made larger to ensure that it can hold heavy mails and large packages.

Why should you bother to do this? What can you get by doing this? First of all, you won’t have to look at that boring little mailbox you have. The second good thing about putting art into your mailbox is you and your neighbors get to enjoy a free art exhibit. Aside from decoration, another benefit is that you don’t have to worry about your work of art getting dirty since it is a mailbox after all, and all mailboxes are supposed to be out there, exposed to the extreme weather conditions. But of course, you must make sure that your design will not be destroyed by the extremes but rather, be made even more beautiful the more dirt and mold it gathers. I’m pretty sure that’s reason enough to try out this little art project.

If you aren’t up to the challenge of building your own creative mailbox you can have them costum made in carpentry shops. Also, you can buy artistic mailboxes in some online shops. Some mailboxes have the conventional box shape but with a colorful print on them. Others have unique shapes to them. Some look like animals such as fish, dogs, birds, elephants, cows and chicken, and others look like little houses. Some of the more creative did not limit the design of the mailbox on the mail receptacle. They went as far as the post that holds the receptacle. In fact, some mailboxes don’t look like a mailbox at all. There are some that are patterned from human beings. For example, the receptacle of the mailbox is the head and the post is in the form of a female’s body. Other mailboxes are inspired by characters in movies like R2D2 from Star Wars.
Usually, the design of the mailbox is related to the nature of its owner’s job or to the owner’s personality. For example, if your profession is in the biological sciences, your mailbox could look like a spinal column. If you like to fish, then your mailbox could look like a swordfish, tuna, and others. There are also mailboxes that intend to tickle your funny bone or to create illusions that will fool anyone who sees it.

One important thing you have to remember is to make sure that no matter how creative your mailbox looks like, it will fail to be a good mailbox if it does not manage to be a good receptacle for mail especially if it fails to protect it from the extreme conditions of the outside world.

A mailbox is a compartment used to receive incoming letters, packages and anything that will go through the local post. Back in the day, mailboxes were usually situated somewhere on the front lawn or just outside a house’s gate. It stands on a wooden or steel post depending on what the general mailbox is made of. As time progressed, the mailbox’s appearance changed as do clothes, cars, and houses, adapting to the transformation of the modern era. And then, the term antique mailbox was conjured.

Basically, antique mailboxes are, as the term suggests, traditional, historic, old-fashioned mailboxes that can also be considered as decorative home items. It is decorative in a sense that one of its main objectives is to look exceptional, elegant and unparalleled. But despite being treated as a fashionable home item, one of the features that make antique mailboxes ideal is its rigidity. Usually, its body is made of brass, copper or stainless steel. Mail boxes made of hard brass are commonly mounted on walls or pillars of homes. It is usually preferred by home owners since it does not need to have a postal lock, as fashioned to have an inner opening, and it does not rust. A cheaper alternative to brass is aluminum. Some mailboxes which naturally rust or easily corrode, like steel and copper, are either powder coated with antique copper or polished with brass or made of galvanized steel to lengthen its lifespan and strengthen its durability.

As of late, the most popular antique mailbox is a bronze wall mounted mailbox designed with an eagle. Its popularity originates from not only its durability but its collaboration with technology. The mailbox is provided with a mail detecting mailbox door that automatically rises upon receiving mail and then lands to a close as soon as the mail is inside. Another bonus is also its refined appearance and the large capacity of mails it can hold. But of course, it does not come cheap as with all other antique mailboxes. The standard price for this elegantly modern antique mailbox is an estimated $139. In general, the price range for these types of fashionably old mailboxes is $80 to $125.

Putting aside the mailbox’s decorative addition to homes, another purpose to these types of mailboxes is its record of history, especially in art. For example, if we look at antique mailboxes and compare them to the present day modern mailboxes, we can see the evolution and maturation of art and the world, from the gothic, dark, Victorian era to the simple, edgy and convenient times of the modern world.
